Iron Man Won't Cowboy Up
Favreau on the hunt for a new Aliens star.
by Jim Vejvoda
January 12, 2010 - It looks like director Jon Favreau and star Robert Downey Jr. will keep their collaboration to one comic book movie franchise only.
The Los Angeles Times reports that Downey will no longer star in Cowboys & Aliens, DreamWorks' adaptation of Platinum Studios' sci-fi/western comic book series that Favreau is set to direct. Scheduling issues were cited as the reason for Downey's exit.
Favreau and the studio are looking for a new star to play the film's six-gun-totin' hero, Zeke Jackson. Cowboys & Aliens aims to begin filming this year for a 2011 release.
Favreau and Downey recently re-teamed for Iron Man 2, which opens May 7.

Meet Bethany Cabe, 'Iron Man 2's OTHER Tough Chick
by Elisabeth Rappe

In my rundown of what comic-based heroines we were going to see onscreen in 2010, I managed to leave out a really cool one: Bethany Cabe of Iron Man 2, who will be played by Kate Mara. When Mara was cast in an "unspecified role" last April, I wondered if she would be playing Cabe and that's since been confirmed by IMDB and Empire. For once, I was right! But I'm less thrilled about that than I am about what this could mean for future Iron Man installments. Cabe is no slouch in Tony Stark's world, and while she may not have the spin-off possibilities of Black Widow, she'll probably be kicking some ass.
Not surprisingly, Cabe first appeared in the pages of Iron Man as most women do -- as a hot chick that Tony wanted to sleep with. They began dating, and initially she was just one of those pesky people Tony had to hide his Iron Man identity from. But then came a scuffle with a sleazy oil company, and Cabe pulled a Vesper Lynd. She had ties to the government, and was a bodyguard working for Cabe and McPherson Security Specialists. (Her own company!) Everyone thought Tony could use a little help, and he was quite grateful they sent him extremely gorgeous protection.
Still unaware of Tony's secret suit, she rescued him from not one, but three supervillains: The Melter, Whiplash, and Blizzard. But Cabe was pissed that Iron Man was engaging in battle for Atlantic City instead of protecting Tony. Apparently, Atlantic City is less important than Stark and while there's probably some aspect of that story I've forgotten, Cabe's continued issues with "Iron Man never helps you!" seemed like a cheesy way to break them up. Which, of course, they did. Tony needs to be free, or the young readers get bored with his icky boyfriend stuff.

War Machine Creator Says 'Iron Man 3' Could Use 'Demon In A Bottle' Story, Debunks 'Iron Man 2' Rumor
by Blair Marnell
EDITOR'S NOTE: With "Iron Man 2" just a few months away from hitting theaters, MTV News contacted War Machine co-creator Bob Layton to discuss the character's upcoming debut on the big screen. The conversation covered a wide range of subjects that we're rolling out this week in a four-part series — concluding with Layton's thoughts on some "Iron Man 2" casting rumors and what might be in store for "Iron Man 3."
As one of the definitive “Iron Man” creative teams, it’s not surprising that several concepts from Bob Layton and David Michelinie’s “Iron Man” run will be prominently featured in the upcoming “Iron Man 2” While Justin Hammer's presence (as played by Sam Rockwell) has long been confirmed, Layton was recently able to address the rumor that Kate Mara was cast as Bethany Cabe in the movie.
“I think there was a rumor on IMDB that Kate Mara was playing Bethany Cabe,” Layton told MTV News. “But that’s not the case. I think she plays an FBI agent briefly in the movie. There are no plans for Bethany Cabe in this movie, as far as I know.”
“I’m really excited about the second film,” continued Layton. “I pretty much know the story backwards and forwards. I got a chance to talk to [‘Iron Man 2’ screenwriter] Justin Theroux and Jon Favreau in great detail about it. You’re going to see some stuff that’s going to blow you away. I have no doubt that when we get to the finale of the film that everyone is going to be impressed with what they’ve come up with.”
Layton also elaborated on why it's the right time for Jim Rhodes to become War Machine in "Iron Man 2," rather than in a later sequel.
“I think there are a variety of reasons to have the War Machine character in there,” offered Layton. “If they’re doing the ‘Avengers’ film, they always have the option of using War Machine instead of Iron Man depending upon what happens contractually. I’m just speculating, I have no idea… But there’s always the possibility that if it does well, it can spinoff. Because obviously there’s a different character and a different motivation with War Machine than there is with Tony Stark.”
Additionally, Layton believes that “Iron Man 3” may incorporate elements from his classic “Demon in a Bottle” storyline. Originally published in 1979, “Demon in a Bottle” follows Tony Stark as he succumbs to his addiction to alcohol while trying to save his company and reputation from Justin Hammer.
“I think they’ve come up with a terrific segue to the third film, which I think is going to be fairly powerful,” said Layton. “My understanding is that the third film could very well be the ‘Demon in a Bottle’ story mixed in there with everything and I’m kind of looking forward to that, if that’s where they wind up going.”
Layton is currently working on a new project for Marvel as well as a graphic novel collection of his creator owned web comic “Colony."

By Katie Allen
Penguin Children’s Books division Sunbird has acquired UK children’s book rights to forthcoming blockbuster “Iron Man 2”.
Sunbird will publish two titles; a double-sided paperback novelisation which will feature the storylines of "Iron Man" and the sequel, plus an official movie storybook with pull-out poster.
Eric Huang, Sunbird publisher, said: "Iron Man 2 publishing rights is the perfect addition to Sunbird’s list of edgy tie-in books. We are all fans of Marvel’s fantastic portfolio and are proud to be their publishing partner once again."
The film, starring Robert Downey Jr and based on a Marvel comic about billionaire inventor Tony Stark who is also superhero "Iron Man", is released in April.

War Machine Creator Describes His 'Iron Man 2' Set Visit And The Dispute He Settled While He Was There!
EDITOR'S NOTE: With "Iron Man 2" just a few months away from hitting theaters, MTV News contacted War Machine co-creator Bob Layton to discuss the character's upcoming debut on the big screen. The conversation covered a wide range of subjects that we're rolling out this week in a four-part series — continuing with today's tale of his "Iron Man 2" set visit and the disagreement he moderated while he was there.
Longtime “Iron Man” writer and artist Bob Layton is recognized as one of the most significant creators to chronicle Tony Stark’s adventures, so it's probably no surprise that he was called upon to help settle a creative disagreement between director Jon Favreau and star Robert Downey Jr. during his visit to the “Iron Man 2” set last summer.
“When I first got on the set, there was a dispute going on between Jon Favreau and Robert Downey Jr. about [Jim Rhodes’] character,” Layton explained to MTV News. “That’s how I was introduced to them. It was like, ‘here’s the guy who helped created the character, why don’t we ask him?’"
"We got into this lively discussion in terms of how Jim Rhodes would react to a certain situation and we all came to some sort of agreement on that," he explained. "I basically acted as an arbitrator.”
“I can’t really tell you anything particular about the story,” continued Layton. “But there’s a point where Tony and Jim are in disagreement on something pretty major. They were trying to understand what Jim’s motivation would be in that situation. I was flattered that they asked me my opinion on it.”
Layton also revealed that he was present for the filming of Whiplash’s confrontation with Tony Stark on the Monte Carlo racetrack.
“At the time I was there, they were shooting the Monte Carlo scene where Mikey Rourke as Whiplash comes out on to the track and starts tearing up cars and basically Tony’s car gets destroyed,” said Layton. “It was pretty action-packed."
"We got to blow up some stuff that day and that was pretty fun, too," he added. "I got to go behind the scenes and meet the stunt people and they made me an honorary stunt man. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to do anything.”
Layton also received an exclusive look at some of the finished special effect shots for the forthcoming film.
“The guys from the special effects unit took me to their trailer and showed me some of the stuff that they were working on which just blew me away," he said. "I had lunch with the cast and crew and just had a really great time there.”
“Here’s the thing that really impressed me," he added. "I went there kind of slack-jawed and in awe of meeting Robert Downey Jr., Jon Favreau and Mickey Rourke. [But] Jon and Robert and the entire cast and crew seemed to be more fans of me than me of them.”
“They were so incredibly respectful and they had read all the comics and knew the stuff backwards and forwards. I was blown away by it," he laughed. "They treated me like I was visiting royalty. I had an absolutely tremendous time. They’ve been incredibly respectful and terrific as far as me and my contributions to the history of the character.”

Iron Man 2 Re-shoot Date & Location Revealed!!
SHH user has revealed when, where, and how long the Iron Man 2 filming will occur.
I reported a while ago that Iron Man 2 will be reshooting some scenes. Well now my same source, user from SHH, Redd, Has just confirmed the date, location, and time.
Iron Man 2 will be filming on January 12th. From Mateo St, 6th St. & 7th Street.
They are going to be there all day, starting at 7:00am until 10pm.
MarvelFreshman:They will probably be using DC Stages & Sets. There, they have sets for: Court Room, Law Library, Judges Chambers Detective Room, Congressional Hearing Room, High Tech Office, Conference Room, Police Dept, Hospital, Bar Nightclub, and even a 4 Cell Blocks Jail - So who knows what they could film there.
It was said by Redd before, that they were reshooting the "Upscale Senate Congressional meeting. Wearing pant suits and business attire." So that may be what they will film, but that couldn't be all they film. from 7am to 10pm.
There will be some filming tomorrow as well.

War Machine Creator Discusses Iron Man 2
Bob Layton, co-creator of War Machine talks more with MTV News about the debut of the character and the casting change leading to Iron Man 2!
Bob Layton was asked what he thought about Jim Rhodes on the big screen versus in the comics:
“For the most part, I think keeping him in the military was an interesting idea,” said Layton. “The more I thought about it, the fact that he wasn’t an employee of Stark’s actually made their friendship work a little better. Part of the problem with the book is that all of Tony’s friends are his employees."
"It was unfortunate that so much of the characterization between Jim and Tony in the first movie wound up on the cutting room floor," he added. "If you see the DVD and the stuff they cut out. I loved some of the scenes they shot that didn’t make it into the movie because it really solidified their friendship.”
MTV also asked Bob on his thoughts about Don Cheadle taking over the role played by Terrance Howard in the first Iron Man:
“I thought [Howard] was good,” Layton said. “He looked more of the role than perhaps Don Cheadle does. Because Cheadle is a smaller guy and we always portrayed Jim Rhodes as a bigger guy. And Terrence Howard is obviously a terrific performer. All of the acting was first rate in [‘Iron Man’].”
“I think what they’ve got coming up in ‘Iron Man 2’ is terrific,” Layton continued. “Obviously Don Cheadle is an Academy Award nominee. How could he not bring something to role? I’m really anxious to see how Don Cheadle comes off as Jim Rhodes.”

Fan-Made War Machine Earns Nod From 'Iron Man 2' Director Jon Favreau
by Josh Wigler
Cosplay is not an uncommon act in the comic book community, though it's usually relegated to events such as Comic-Con International. But that's not stopping one fan from getting his "Iron Man" suit on early.
As posted on Jon Favreau's Twitter account, the "Iron Man 2" director has apparently discovered the creation of a fan-made War Machine costume, designed after the armor worn by Don Cheadle in the upcoming Marvel Studios film.
While the various technology-heavy weaponry featured on the costume isn't exactly operational — I sure hope it isn't, at least — the suit, designed by Anthony Le, is nonetheless an impressive feat.
Le lists a whole host of specs for the costume, including "repulsor gauntlets," laser-equipped "wrist rockets," an arch reactor that's "accurate" to the movie and a "Mini Gun simulated fire and drop lock system w/ laser." Like I said, I can only hope that these weapons aren't authentic for the sake of Splash Page readers everywhere.
Still, even if the fan-made War Machine suit is fully equipped with deadly guns, lasers and weapons aplenty, I'm not sure that we have too much to worry about. Based upon pictures of Le earning a smooch from a bartender, posing alongside a bystander and nursing a lonely Corona Extra, I think it's safe to say that this War Machine is a pretty friendly guy.
The jury is still out on the inventor of the wrist-mounted flamethrower, however.
